  • It is my understanding that this meeting may also feature one or more ballots to elect a mayor. Also, the core topic of the meeting is “to develop a policy statement in preparation for the MBTA public hearing” that is to take place the following week. This includes not only proposed cuts in service but also proposed fare increases. I would also expect that the City Council might endorse a recommendation that the Legislature change the financing structure of the MBTA to include, for example, a small increase in the gas tax as a dedicate revenue source. Whether or not the Legislature will support such a tax, even a miniscule one, in an election year is questionable.
