Maud Morgan Arts has received $3,000 to support a collaboration with Gately Youth Center, a North Cambridge community after-school program that serves many youth from low-income households, to provide ceramics classes for students ages 11-14. As part of the grant program of the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC), a state agency, this funding was awarded through the Cambridge Arts Council.

Grants are awarded through a competitive process and receiving funds signifies that Maud Morgan Arts provides a high level of quality in its programs, community services and administrative ability. A group of 6-8 students join MMA every week, developing their hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques. Classes are currently scheduled through June, and we hope to continue the program through December.

“A partnership with MMA would allow young people at Gately to access a space and supplies that are typically unavailable. It would introduce young people to a new artistic medium and support them with instruction,” says Gately Youth Center Pre-Teen Program Director Ben Godfrey.

The Cambridge Arts Council grant program is funded by the City of Cambridge and an allocation from the MCC. The mission of the MCC is to promote excellence, inclusion, education, and diversity in the arts, humanities and sciences to foster a rich cultural life for all Massachusetts residents and contributes to the vitality of our communities and economy. The not-for-profit cultural industry has a $2.56 billion economic impact in the state and generates $24.4 billion in federal, state and local tax revenues annually.
