At Agassiz Baldwin Community (ABC) we have been educating children for over thirty years. Sacramento Street Preschool provides a small, individualized program for twenty children per day (ages two years nine months to five years of age). We see each child as an individual with unique social, emotional, physical, and cognitive strengths and needs. It is our goal to create a developmentally appropriate preschool curriculum that engages each child.
We are firm believers in play! Through a curriculum of sensory exploration, dramatic play, music and visual arts, our primary emphasis is on the social enrichment of the children, especially in preparation for future school experiences. Sacramento Street Preschool values and celebrates cultural and family diversity. Our population is drawn from local neighborhoods and a variety of countries, forming a rich cultural community.
Daily staff consists of two Co-Lead Teachers and an Assistant Teacher with education, expertise and experience in early childhood care. The program is led by the Early Education Site Director, Samantha Eaton. On some days the program is also supported by interns or work-study students who work part-time while receiving training in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related field. Staff is trained in First Aid and CPR for young children. In addition, the preschool program has dedicated art classes at the Maud Morgan Arts Center.
Sacramento Street Preschool is located in three rooms of the first floor at Agassiz Baldwin Community at 20 Sacramento Street, a large Victorian house. Our spacious backyard includes a sandbox with a water component, children’s garden and plenty of room to run around and play. Classrooms consist of a kitchen/art room, large meeting room, and a cozy carpeted playroom. When weather permits, we also have access to the Sacramento Field playground across the street.
Sacramento Street Preschool values family involvement and hosts several workshops, monthly parent coffees, and events throughout the school year. We also invite family members to come in as “Mystery Guests” to read a favorite story or to share a special talent with the class. Each spring, the preschool and afterschool programs hosts their own art show in the Chandler Gallery.
