Our Curriculum

At Agassiz Baldwin Community (ABC) we have been educating children for over thirty years. Sacramento Street Preschool provides a small, arts-based program in a mixed-age setting. We use a multifaceted, hands-on approach to explore different topics or themes throughout the year. Sample multi-week topics include the plant life cycle, simple machines, and kitchen science.

Teachers will also build foundational pre-literacy skills through read-alouds and exploration of books, poetry, and songs. A key means of exploration and learning with be through the use of performance arts and mixed media. Performance arts like music, theater, dance, and puppetry will be incorporated each day during circle time and small group play. Each day students will also visit the Maud Morgan Art Center to explore and experiment. Children wrap up their preschool day with open-ended free play in our big backyard!

In addition to developing essential pre-literacy and sensorimotor skills, our preschoolers work on social-emotional skills through group play and our use of Nurtured Heart, a social-emotional curriculum that seeks to celebrate a child’s personal value, belonging, and importance.

Our highest priority at Sacramento Street Preschool is welcoming and supporting each individual child and helping all students develop a love of learning! We aim to ensure that all students have a joyful first school experience. Children will matriculate from the program with a love of learning ready for a larger kindergarten classroom and beyond.

Our Staff

Our teaching team is made up of two teachers who have a background in early education and the arts! Together, they build and design the curriculum, taking into consideration children’s needs and interests. The program is led by the Early Education Site Director, Samantha Eaton. On some days the program is also supported by interns or work-study students who work part-time while receiving training in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related field. Staff is trained in First Aid and CPR for young children.

Our Space

Sacramento Street Preschool is located in three rooms of the first floor at Agassiz Baldwin Community at 20 Sacramento Street, a large Victorian house. The preschool also uses the art studio in Maud Morgan Arts each day for dedicated visual arts programming. Our spacious backyard includes a sandbox with a water component, children’s garden, and plenty of room to run around and play. Classrooms consist of a kitchen/art room, large meeting room, and a cozy carpeted playroom. In our backyard is the Maud Morgan Art Center. Children will visit the 3-D studio each day. The 3-D studio is designed for young children. When weather permits, we also have access to the Sacramento Field playground across the street.

Family Events

Sacramento Street Preschool values family involvement and hosts a different family event each month. These optional events are designed to build community and celebrate the work our children are doing in preschool. In addition, there are many ways families may engage with the preschool: joining on field trips, helping with snack, or sharing a special interest or story with the class.

We host parent/teacher conferences throughout the year and families are always welcome to schedule a meeting with teachers at any point.
