Before World War II backyard cottages and small apartments located in larger homes were more common. Over time, zoning laws changed in favor of housing trends of the times. With the severe housing crisis in many U.S. urban areas, cities are beginning to examine anew the pros and cons of accessory apartments. Could they be one answer to easing our region’s housing crisis?
