“Taking an art class can introduce a new way of seeing the world,” says Maud Morgan Arts painting instructor Roz Sommer. This fall, Maud Morgan Arts is offering dozens of new ways to see the world with classes in printmaking, drawing, painting, photography, fabric arts, woodworking and ceramics. From mixed media classes for preschool and kindergarten students to an art critique workshop for serious artists looking to compose a cohesive artist’s statement, Maud Morgan Arts provides an entry point to the wonders of visual art for every skill level and every age.

With small class sizes and instructors who are professional artists/educators, Maud Morgan Arts encourages students to develop not only their skills, but also their originality.

“[Students] will learn that one’s individual way of seeing and thinking is a very valuable part of art,” says Sommer. “I will offer open-ended assignments to give students opportunities to realize unique, individual solutions.” Sommer’s two classes, “Investigative Painting,” and “Painting: Line, Plane and Color,” give grade school and middle school students a chance to experiment with tempera and acrylic paint. For adults, Maud Morgan Arts is bringing back a popular workshop, “Creative Collaboration: A Weekend with Master Printers,” where students can take their printmaking to the next level by producing monotypes and monoprints under the guidance of professional printmakers. Prints from this workshop will be displayed in a pop-up exhibition at the Cambridge Art Association’s Kathryn L. Schultz Gallery.

The desire to have your work on display in a gallery is a good reason to enroll in an art class, but Sommer describes other more profound benefits: “It can build on a passion that already exists or stimulate an interest in an entirely new pursuit. It can build on previous knowledge or be a beginning of a new path. It can provide a way to try something in a safe, supportive atmosphere. Age is not a factor and it is never too late to do this.”
